STEM

STEM at Dene Academy

At Dene Academy, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) plays an important role in inspiring curiosity, developing creativity and preparing students for future opportunities. Through engaging, practical experiences, we encourage our students to think critically, solve problems and explore how STEM subjects shape the world around them.

Our STEM programme provides opportunities to learn beyond the classroom, connect with industry professionals and discover the exciting range of careers available within STEM industries. We aim to develop confidence, resilience and ambition, empowering every student to recognise their potential.

STEM Visitors and Trips

We bring learning to life by connecting students with STEM professionals, further education providers and real-world working environments. These experiences help students understand how classroom learning translates into future study and employment.

Opportunities include:

  • Guest speakers sharing their experiences of STEM careers.
  • Educational visits to science centres, colleges and technology companies.
  • Careers events and workshops exploring STEM pathways.
  • Practical challenges that encourage teamwork, innovation and problem-solving.

STEM Across the Curriculum

STEM learning is embedded across a range of subjects at Dene Academy, helping students develop transferable skills and apply their knowledge to real-world challenges.

  • Science develops investigative, analytical and scientific thinking skills.
  • Technology and Design & Technology encourage creativity, designing, making and practical problem-solving.
  • Mathematics strengthens logical reasoning, numeracy and the application of mathematical concepts.
  • Computing develops digital literacy, computational thinking and programming skills.

Through practical activities, collaborative projects and problem-solving challenges, students are encouraged to experiment, evaluate ideas and develop the skills needed for further education, training and future careers.

Primary STEM

We are passionate about inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, mathematicians and innovators. Our Primary STEM programme gives younger pupils opportunities to explore STEM subjects in an engaging, hands-on environment, helping to build curiosity and confidence from an early age.

Working collaboratively with our local primary schools, we offer:

  • Hands-on workshops delivered by Dene Academy staff.
  • Exciting STEM challenge days that encourage teamwork and creative thinking.
  • Taster sessions in science, and technology.
  • Collaborative projects that introduce pupils to practical STEM skills and concepts.

By creating positive and memorable STEM experiences, we aim to nurture aspirations, challenge perceptions and support a lifelong interest in learning.

At Dene Academy, STEM is about more than subjects in the classroom. It is about inspiring ideas, developing skills and helping every student explore the possibilities of their future.
