Young Carers

What is a Young Carer?

Young carers are children and young people aged 5 – 18 years who help care in families where someone has an illness, a disability, a mental health issue or for someone who has an alcohol or drug problem.

Young carers often do a lot of helpful things, such as:

  • Personal Care
  • Cooking
  • Cleaning
  • Paying bills
  • Emotional support
  • Shopping
  • Sibling care
  • Giving medication

The person they help care for might be a parent, a sibling, a grandparent or other relative.
