PSHE & RSHE
Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE).
PSHE and RSHE enable students to make links between their schoolwork and their lives outside of school.
The curriculum has been developed to enable our students to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of the world around them. This is so they can lead confident, healthy, independent lives and become informed, active and responsible citizens.
Students are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of their school and the local community. In doing so they learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. They reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
Students also find out about the main political and social institutions that affect their lives and about their responsibilities, rights and duties as individuals and members of communities. They learn to understand and respect our common humanity; diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.

At Dene Academy, our Personal Development (PD) programme supports pupils to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and confidence they need to lead safe, healthy, responsible and fulfilling lives. The programme brings together key areas including Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE), PSHE, Citizenship, Careers, British Values, Protected Characteristics, wellbeing and personal safety, with content carefully planned to be age-appropriate and responsive to the needs of our pupils. We are committed to working openly with parents and carers and recognise the important role they play in supporting their children’s learning. As part of this commitment, we provide representative samples of lessons and resources from different year groups so that parents and carers can see the type of content pupils encounter and use these as a starting point for conversations at home.
Parents and carers are welcome to contact the school to discuss the curriculum, raise questions or request to view the materials used in RSHE teaching. All resources remain subject to applicable copyright requirements, and where resources are provided by external organisations, appropriate acknowledgement and conditions of use will apply. Our aim is to ensure that parents and carers are informed, involved and confident in the important role Personal Development plays in promoting pupils’ wellbeing, safety, resilience and preparation for life beyond school.
Below, we have provided a selection of representative sample lessons from different year groups to give parents and carers an insight into the content, themes and learning experiences included within our Personal Development programme.
