Help With Moving Up

Moving up from primary to secondary school is an exciting and significant event in a child’s life. It is an important milestone which, for many parents and teachers, marks a change in expectations regarding crucial life-skills such as self-organisation and independent working.

Here at Dene Academy, we understand that this is a challenging time and do our best to support pupils and their parents through the transition process:

  • Your child’s new Year Leader will visit their primary school and spend time getting to know your child; this may take the form of a meeting with the Year 6 teacher, a transition session for the pupils and/or small group sessions.
  • Pupils will visit Dene with the rest of their class from Primary school on Induction Day. Induction Day gives pupils the opportunity to get to know our school buildings and meet some of the key staff in school. Perhaps most importantly of all, your child will meet their form tutor and the rest of their tutor group.
  • We also run transition sessions for parents in July and September. These are designed to, hopefully, give parents greater peace of mind about the transition phase: ‘Getting to know Dene’ and ‘Supporting your Child’s Learning at Dene.’ These sessions are an opportunity to meet other parents in a relaxed and informal way, meet key members of staff face to face, familiarise yourselves with the school setting and find out who is available to support you and your child.

If you have and questions or queries about the transition process, please do get in touch.
